“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
– Isaiah 9:6
Tucked away in Isaiah 9:6 is a wonderful prophecy concerning Jesus. A child, born of a human virgin, is the unique mighty God of the universe. This is the faith of Jesus Christ: He was born of a virgin, yet He is the mighty God. Jesus is also, “Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us’” (Matt. 1:23).
Believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God is the very essence of the Christian faith. To believe that Jesus is the Son of God means that He is God—not a third of God, but the complete God. This is an essential part of the faith in order to have eternal life.
His Incarnation – God Put On Flesh to Become Man
God, who was in the beginning and ever existing, became flesh. This is truly a great mystery. God became a man to have a dwelling place among man. The word for “dwelt” in the Greek literally means, “to pitch a tent” for residing. This word is a clear reference to the tabernacle in the Old Testament. God had commanded Moses to build a tabernacle, where He dwelt on earth for forty years. The temple replaced the tabernacle after Israel entered the good land. In John 1, Jesus in the flesh is referred to as the reality of the tabernacle. He is God residing in the flesh. Wherever the flesh of Jesus goes, God goes.
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
– John 1:14
Just as the tabernacle (where God resided) in the Old Testament was full of God’s glory, Jesus, who is the real tabernacle of God, is full of God’s glory. Inside His flesh, a fallen body of man, is the glory of God; therefore, Jesus is full of grace and truth. The incarnation of God, Jesus Christ, is full of grace and truth for man’s enjoyment and participation. This is a mystery that cannot be fully explained. God became a real man, had a real birth, and had a real, physical body. This is an essential point of the Christian faith.
May this truth (who is Jesus Christ Himself) be made real in our lives and our homes, and may the world see His glory as He grows and is expressed in wisdom and grace in all His believers. This is the meaning for the joyous celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
